Engravings & Inlay; Clay Surface Design Mishima & Sgraffito! (4/18; 2-4pm)

  • Pudgy's Place 119R Foster Street Peabody, MA, 01960 United States (map)

In this clay workshop, you'll learn the basics of Mishima (a Japanese inlay technique) and Sgraffito (an Italian engraving technique). We will use leather-hard slab tiles that have been rolled and pre-dried. You'll be guided through each step with demos, instructions, and personalized tips in an encouraging space! The cups featured in the images for this event are examples of how to use the design techniques we will discuss and demo.

The goal for this workshop is to explore the different surface design styles and options to expand on your clay knowledge. If you've never touched clay before, you're still welcome to come and enjoy learning surface design! It's helpful for potters to have this knowledge, but it's also super fun to try. Go ahead and enjoy a night out full of good vibes, goofiness, and mud! :)

Your pieces will be ready for pick up approximately 3-4 weeks after the event (or can be shipped to you for an additional $10 fee). Pottery/ceramics needs to be fired in a kiln twice (once for bisque and the second for glaze), which takes multiple days. Once glaze-fired, the pieces will be non-toxic and safe to use, should you want to; they can be put in the dishwasher and microwave, but NOT in or on the stove. Both firings are included in the workshop fee, and you get to pick how you want your piece to be glazed (colored) in the end!

All classes and workshops are open to anyone over the age of 10 years old, any person under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Note: Shahane will be the instructor! She has taught pottery since 2016, got her BFA in ceramic arts in 2015 with a double minor in art history and psychology, and owns Pudgy's Place with her husband Phillip :)
