Today, we will be making customized and unique raw planters! This is a unique lesson because usually, for pottery to be functional, it needs to be fired in a kiln first. However, since clay is healthy, nutrient-rich dirt, we can use it to make a planter with seeds mixed into the clay! The plant will grow from the walls (sides) of the piece you make, meaning no extra soil is required. For upkeep of your plant, you'll need to keep the clay semi-hydrated; the clay should be kept hydrated via a spray bottle. In this clay workshop, you'll learn all the beginner essentials for slab building, a hand-building technique. You'll be guided through each step with demos, instructions, and personalized tips in an encouraging space!
The goals for the night are to explore a new art form, have fun, and make something with your hands! Ceramics is one of the most meditative mediums as it connects us with ourselves, the earth, and all elements. Go ahead and enjoy a night out full of good vibes, goofiness, and mud! :)
Usually, your pieces would be ready for pickup approximately 4 weeks after the event (or shipped for an added fee). However, since we do not need to fire them, you can take these creations home the same day! Now, if you wanted to bring the pieces back to us once the plants have dried out / died, then we can fire them in the kiln for an additional fee (depending on the size of the creation).
Our typical age range for classes and workshops is 18+, though anyone over the age of 10 years old is welcome to attend (any person under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult at all times). Please visit our events page and website for more information and registration.
Note: Shahane will be the instructor! She has taught pottery since 2016, got her BFA in ceramic arts in 2015 with a double minor in art history and psychology, and owns Pudgy's Place with her husband Phillip :)
