Medusa’s Protection- a vase meant to hold wet or dry cut flowers or as a false pot. 

In this piece Medusa hears a lovely tune and slithers out of her basket to see where it’s coming from. Accompanied by her familiars she enjoys the melody.

Most of us know the traditional story of Medusa from the movies but I prefer the later depiction of her as a protector. In her devotion to the goddess Athena she practices piety in a temple yet she is defiled by a jealous man against her will (to put it lightly.) In cries of agony Medusa prays to Athena for power, protection, and revenge. From her post Athena looked down and transformed Medusa into the greatest of the Gorgons, a race of powerful beasts from Ancient Greek mythos. Those who had sacred and safe spaces for women would put small bronze coin plaques of Medusa’s head on their doors.
